A Weekend in Waidhofen

Waidhofen/Thaya is situated in the heart of the Thayatal river valley and exudes the relaxing air of a Waldviertel - a wood-quarter - small town.

After arriving in Waidhofen and checking in, it’s time for evening plans. How about a cozy dinner and concluding the night with an arts program? All this is waiting for you on a Friday evening to start off your weekend getaway. But first things first. Waidhofen’s city center offers a variety of exceptional hot spots to indulge your culinary passions. With dinner finished, it’s off to the Waidhofen Folk Club for a concert. The next day is off to a good start with a vitalizing breakfast at your accommodation or any of the many restaurants available. Now, restored and revived, planning for the day ahead becomes an easy task.

Today’s first destination is the world’s largest northern bald ibis aviary, built at the foot of Waidhofen’s town wall. The northern bald ibis - also hermit ibis or Waldrapp - is a rare member of the ibis family of birds and ranks among the most critically endangered species in the world. Our next stop finds us at the great Basilika, a monumental collection of monoliths created by renowned sculptor Franz Xaver Ölzant just outside the city limits. The afternoon is booked with a visit to the Waidhofen outdoor pool. The newly renovated and refurbished leisure center and outdoor pool is particularly popular in the surrounding provinces, and offers a sandy play area and a dedicated kiddy pool with its own winding fun slide and clown themed shower to its youngest guests. All that exercise will inevitably make you hungry, but a tasty dinner is already waiting for you.

The rest of the evening lends itself to attending a play at TAM - Theater an der Mauer (theater at the wall), a theater ensemble well known past regional borders. The playhouse is situated in the historic center of Waidhofen/Thaya in the Waldviertel and has been aptly named for the medieval town wall that serves as the auditorium’s far wall. What a weekend! After breakfast it’s time for the arts and one of Waidhofen’s many artist studios lends itself to the occasion. But two more stops await: The town’s parish church is located in the city center of the Thaya town, just north of the town square. The weekend trip finds a close with a visit to the Waidhofen town museum.
